Guru Amar Das, the third Sikh Guru, institutionalized the concept of Langar inspired by the teachings of Guru Nanak. He taught that all are equal in the eyes of God. He asked all those wishing to see him, regardless of caste, to first sit together and eat a humble vegetarian meal. This was a revolutionary concept in 16th Century India, a country bound by the caste system for many hundreds of years.
Guru Ram Das Ashram community members take turns providing an informal meal that is served in front of the ashram at 12 p.m. Monday through Friday. We serve these meals to whomever may stop by, including members of the community, neighbors and the homeless.
If you would like to provide langar for about 25-30 people, donate paper goods or offer a monetary donation, contact the Community Coordinator.
Guru ka Langar is a blessed vegetarian communal meal served after Sunday's Gurdwara program. Langar is prepared and served by a different Missal each week. Everyone is welcome to help serve Sunday Langar. All that is needed is a freshly cleaned pair of hands. Servers meet outside at the langar service tables immediately following the Gurdwara service and are assigned their tasks.
You may sponsor (provide funds for) or provide (prepare all or part of) Guru ka Langar for any occasion meaningful to you. If you would like to provide Langar for up to 150 people, donate paper goods or offer a monetary donation, contact the Sevadar at (310) 858-7691.
The GRDA Building Fund helps to expand our community.
